Elias Kalogirou
| Elias Kalogirou is a charismatic and much awarded educator who has applied an innovative approach in teaching Physics while serving in high schools in the region of Heleia for the last 25 years. Elias studied Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Athens. As a teacher in secondary education he sought to enrich teaching Physics with experiments and demonstration tools, as he believes that these experiences can play a prominent role in students’ lives. Elias’s approach and his laboratory experience have received attention at a European level. In 2012, he was recognized as the best teacher of Europe in Copenhagen, winning the European Programme “Science on Stage” contest with his project describing the function of the rainbow. This was not the first prize for Elias. In 2002, he distinguished in the Panhellenic Competition on Constructions and Experiments in Physics with his project “Studying the wave phenomena with the linear elastic medium”, while most recently in the Netherlands his project was one of the 10 projects that were awarded at the European level. The following year, he received the 1st European Award on Teaching Physical Sciences with his project “Approaching the physiological function of the human ear”. In 2009, he received the award “Magicians of Science”, while this year he participated in the assessment of teaching Physics at the 5th Panhellenic Student Contest for the participation at the 11th European Olympiad of Sciences organized by the European Union Science Olympiad [EUSO 2013]. His record also includes a number of seminars and national conferences on the didactics of Physical Sciences.
